Ruby Shoes, The Looking Glass, and Why Perspective Matters
“Change the way you look at things,
the things you look at change.”
~ Dr. Wayne Dyer
The Cambridge Dictionary describes perspective being, “a particular way of viewing things that depends on one’s experience and personality.” Viewpoint is the inherently subjective foundation determining thoughts and shaping attitudes, beliefs, emotions, decisions, and more. Vantage, an instantaneously shiftable position, offers tremendous possibility birthing dreams.
Are what we say and who we actually are the same? Do we sufficiently and thoroughly question the stories we tell ourselves? How does who think we are inform the cynosure we choose? When and to what degree, for our current state, do we take responsibility?
“We don’t see things as they are;
we see them as we are.”
~ Anaïs Nin
“Life is what you make it,” suggests the observer is also the creator. Events, in themselves, are both factual and have the distinct interpretation they are assigned. The same situation, even when affecting many, depending on each person’s particular inclination, is attributed very specific significance.
Desire and discomfort are often primary motivators prompting deeper self-analysis. Life’s ebbs and flows offer us continuing opportunities reevaluating the meaning we assign circumstances, interactions, people, places, and things. Occurrences, at first, may seem most unfavorable, and then nurture immense compassion, determination, enlightenment, forgiveness, humility, serenity, and more.
“If you nurture your mind, body, and spirit,
your time will expand;
you will gain a new perspective
that will allow you to accomplish much more.”
~ Brian Koslow
Consider a curious child anxiously scampering up a beckoning, sturdy, tall tree. The youth excitedly welcomes adventure certain all will be well. The adult mind immediately identifies how safety is not ensured and determines exploring the tree is unwise. The appropriate approach may be assimilating both assessments and simply, with tremendous awareness, proceed. The conditions are identical, and the only distinction is how pertinent information is processed.
An excellent example is the dandelion, Taraxacum officinale, a flowering herbaceous perennial plant of the Asteraceae family. The definition determines the treatment. Landscapers may perceive the lovely sunshine-hued blooms without any aesthetic value and remove them. Naturopaths. beyond celebrating their simple beauty, understand their value and orally and topically apply their immense health benefits.
“To effectively change ourselves,
we first had to change our perceptions.”
~ Stephen R. Covey
Alice of Wonderland, Dorothy of Oz, and numerous fictional characters’ spectacular journeys illustrate how even the slightest reframing influences the entire picture. Alice’s physical alterations automatically inspire new inquiries providing expansive insight. Dorothy’s empowering realizations and renewed gratitude remind us we always have the choice.
Perspective’s fluid, malleable nature invites expansive awareness, honesty, and illumination. The internal state scripts the external world. Our constantly reevaluating what we are absolutely certain is true guides deeper self-exploration opening the body, heart, mind, and spirit. Transformation, the ultimate, power, by slightly and simply adjusting our focus, offers us tremendous growth making us simultaneously student and teacher mastering our destiny.

The Power of Appreciation
The Power of Appreciation
“‘You don’t know what you got till it’s gone.’ I say, you knew what you had, you just never thought it could slip away.
We often take for granted the very things that deserve our gratitude the most. We do this with both people and material possessions. The problem is many people do not realize this until it’s too late.
We take things for granted on a daily basis, always with the assumption that whenever we need something, it will be there. There are many things that we fail to realize the true value of until they are missing from our lives. Sadly. Enjoy the little things in life because someday you will realize they were the big things. Happiness doesn’t come as a result of getting what you don’t have, rather it’s recognizing and appreciating what you do have.
Don’t lose something you have for something you think you want. What you have now was once everything you prayed you wanted. Think of how lucky you are to have someone you can be completely comfortable around that is a true gift and one that should be cherished at all times. Think about how lucky you are to have the job you have and the life you live. You fought for where you are now. Live in the moment and appreciate the now.
Just because something becomes repetitive does not mean it needs to be replaced. Silence the noise inside your mind and realize what you have in front of you. Don’t wait until you’ve lost it to finally see how much you took it for granted.
Too many times people don’t realize what they have because they are out there looking for something they assume is better. The grass ain’t always greener kids. ‘Be thankful for what you have; you’ll end up having more. If you concentrate on what you don’t have you will never, ever have enough.'”
~ Khloé Kardashian ~

Here Comes the Sun
Here Comes the Sun
“The ultimate measure of a man is not where he stands in moments of comfort,
rather where he stands at times of challenge and controversy.”
~ Martin Luther King, Junior ~
The 2012 United States electoral campaign has been ripe with unreliable facts, finger-pointing, name-calling, unfair comparisons, and dissecting the opposition based on past criteria versus building up America by focusing on teaming together to accomplish immediate action plans. Voters seeking authenticity and reliable information navigate social media’s muddied waters and thick clouds to discern truth and make the best choices in the upcoming election. Websites like www.votesmart.org track politicians’ records helping voters make informed election choices.
“Leadership is an opportunity to serve.”
~ J. Donald Waters~
The predominant, one-sided question being asked of the U.S. President in the 2012 presidential election, while not being asked similarly of the Governor of Massachusetts is, “Are we better off now than four years ago?” Political candidates would have you answer by looking to graphs, numbers, statistics, and the like. Marketing analysts will tell you any numbers can be manipulated to appear discouraging and encouraging depending on presentation and usage, which essential proves the numbers to be deceptive and ineffective in quantifying any real change and growth. How, then do we evaluate what has and has not changed in four years?
“What we see depends mainly on what we look for.”
~ John Lubbock ~
Breathe. Relax. Close your eyes. Picture yourself back in 2007, 2008, and 2009. What was your life like? Where did you live, play, and work? What did you drive? Were you going to school, and was education even an option for you? What did you do for recreation, vacation, etc.? Take some time, and really consider it. Reminisce by browsing old photos. Speak with friends about it. It is important to be accurate and precise, especially if you are using it as voting criteria in this election.
“Reflect upon your present blessings of which every man has many.”
~ Charles Dickens ~
I speak only for myself recognizing my experience is not the collective, and I encourage You consider the same for yourself. I believe and feel absolutely and wholeheartedly, yes, we are both superficially and spiritually better now than four years ago. I have witnessed friends begin better-paying jobs, buy new vehicles, move into new homes, and more. People began saving, sending their children to college, and vacationing. Entertainers and individuals in hospitality jobs have managed to continue supporting themselves with new opportunities on the horizon. Big Bird has even managed to keep his job and nest on Sesame Street under President Obama. Those who survived and are beginning to thrive are now able to help others move forward.
“There are two ways to live: you can live as if nothing is a miracle;
you can live as if everything is a miracle.”
~ Albert Einstein ~
What is beyond the superficial and most important? You and how you developed emotionally and spiritually in four years is imperative. How have You grown? What have You learned? Who are You becoming? Where are You going? Who accompanies You on your journey? The intangible lessons and wisdom gained and carried within us are infinite resources serving us our entire lives. We elected a leader who said and says, “Yes, we can,” and, we did. We learned how resilient and resourceful we are as individuals and a nation. We have become more compassionate, empathetic, loving, and patient with one another. We grew in humility with greater respect for the magnitude of teamwork. We have succeeded in going beyond problems to implementing solutions. We have and are continuing to blossom and develop as enterprising, giving, intelligent, kind, passionate, talented people stepping fully into our authentic selves and receiving the amazing blessings The Lord has for us all.
“Do not go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path and leave a trail.”
~ Ralph Waldo Emerson ~
Ask yourself, “What is true for me?” Question everything you hear and read. Consider it for yourself verses deferring to experts. Dissect it. Educate yourself. Research it. Study it. Learn the history behind it. Approach as if your life depends on it because your future definitely does. You are important. Your vote counts. Choose wisely.
Yes, we can.
“You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.”
~ John 8:32 ~
